Culture of Discipline
This blog section will be a continuation of our “Good to Great” by Jim Collins series keeping our focus specifically on the concept of “Culture of Discipline”: To form a disciplined organization you must have the correct people on your bus, these people must be self-disciplined. Over time, this will become the overall company culture. Often times, bureaucracy is created within an organization to offset the small number of wrong people who are riding on your bus. These people typically lack self-discipline & motivation. Rules are usually put into place to manage this small group of individuals. However, these rules typically repel the right people riding on your bus; they feel as if the rules are unnecessary and slow down the pace of production. This drives away the right people from your bus and more wrong people are added to the bus. This drives away even more right people, and the cycle repeats itself. The company eventually becomes completely hierarchical and bureaucratic to manage all of the added wrong people on the bus.
To keep this from happening, create a culture of discipline with an entrepreneurial spirit. This will take a good company to great & lead you to a path of many successes. To do this, build a culture of freedom within a set framework. This translates to hiring people who can operate within a framework; you will not have to manage these people but just keep the process that is, in place. This will allow for an entrepreneurial spirit while still setting baseline rules & regulations. Be sure that you hire the right people on your bus who will accomplish all of their duties. Do not become a dictator while creating a culture of discipline, even if this leadership style is prosperous, as soon as the leader leaves the culture will collapse. Be sure to use strong concentration while abiding by your “Hedgehog Concept”& compose a list of things to stop doing. If a task does not fall within your hedgehog concept, then stop doing it! Practice self-discipline to stay within those three circles if something does not fit within the concept; it should be dismissed.
It all comes down to being restrained within three areas. Hiring Disciplined People, having the correct people on your bus is absolutely crucial. Having the incorrect people traveling on your bus prompts you to discipline them to get the correct performance. Instead, have self-disciplined people riding on your bus and won’t have to manage them as strictly. Practice Disciplined Thinking and stick to your “stop doing” list. Ensure that all your thoughts align with the three circles within the Hedgehog Concept. Carry out Disciplined Actions, you cannot carry out disciplined actions without the previous two steps. Follow these steps in order and take your company from Good to Great!
In order to produce & sustain great results, you must build a culture of discipline. You will do this by getting the right people on your bus. Additionally, Avoid creating a bureaucracy as this will drive the right people off of your bus. Rather, create a framework with freedom within for people to engage in their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit!
